You left out the juiciest thing the Mayor did Thursday: he helped open the renovated North Central animal shelter, complete with a small gaggle of protesting animal crazies outside, kept at bay by a cordone of sawbones with saw horses. But their incessant carping on bullhorns was audible during the ceremony and it clearly distracted hizzoner.
The demonstrators were calling the expanded shelter, with three times the holding capacity for animals, just a shinier, bigger "death camp." One can only wonder if they've thought about the possibility that a bigger shelter means more animals can be housed for longer periods of time, thus giving them a better chance to be adopted. Apparently not.
The problem is that there are too many homeless animals finding their way to the city, county and other shelters, and NO jurisdiction is successful at finding new homes for all of them. That's the bottom line, no matter who's running the shelter and who's protesting outside events like this.
Maybe if the protesters all went in and adopted an animal or two before they left the scene, they would actually have saved a few animals. As it is, by focusing on trying to get MAV to fire the current Animal Services GM just so another "puppy killer" could be hired to take his place, they wasted their own, and everybody's, time. And so it goes on and on in "Mondo Cane"...
